Abolitionists (Thursday, November 14)

Questions:

  • What motivated people to become abolitionists?
  • What tactics / methods did abolitionists use to fight slavery?

Who are the abolitionists? A group of people dedicated to the destruction of slavery. Abolitionists were a diverse lot – men and women, black and white, former slaves and aristocratic whites. They were just as diverse in the tactics / strategy they adopted in their fight to end slavery. In class, we researched various abolitionists by using some articles from PBS’s Africans in America series: David Walker, William Lloyd Garrison, Frederick Douglass, Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and John Brown. Use the following link to research these men and women and complete this notesheet.
